Someone asked me one time where I come up with my story ideas. My answer was simple -- everything is a story. That random person you see walking down the street has a story. Where is he going? What is he leaving behind? Is his journey sad, happy, epic, mundane?
For me, the challenge isn't finding an idea to start, it's seeing that idea to completion before another pops in.Take my story Granted. It's long overdue, and I'm excited to see Micah Jones' and Lucille's stories unfold. Also, I have some surprises for my faithful Beta Reader club, and I can't wait for them to see what I've done.
I'm working very hard on finishing this fairy series, and what happens? Another story pops in my brain. What if a mermaid prince whom everyone thought was dead might actually be alive and banished to land? One brave mermaid will have to come onto dry land to find the truth.
I'm not sure how it works for other writers, but when I have an idea I love, I have to start writing it or it will nag me and distract me from my other projects. So, Granted is behind schedule because Son of Water wouldn't be ignored. I wrote the first chapter for Son of Water and can now settle back to Granted and, hopefully, stay laser-focused.
Hopefully.....
What do you do to stay focused?
